Those little red raisin boxes, the girl with a red bonnet and green grapes. You know who I’m talking about. The Sun-Maid raisin girl!
Many of us know her at a glance. She’s iconic and she’s a real person, named Lorraine Collett Petersen. She lived in the Fresno, California area around 1915 where the company (Sun-Maid) began operations. Life was much simpler then, less hectic. Red Sunbonnets were the fashion of the day.
When we open the little red box we know it holds lots of little raisins for snacking or recipes, but what we easily forget are the nutritional benefits that are packed inside this little red box.
- A high energy food, offering natural sugars, potassium, and the fiber and tartaric acid necessary to keep your digestive system healthy.
- According to the USDA Food Guide Pyramid just a 1/4 cup of raisins provides one full serving of fruit.
- Research has even shown that raisins contain phytochemicals and antioxidants which help prevent mouth bacteria, gum disease and tooth decay, making raisins a smart snack for your teeth and gums.
