Rafting on the Gorge was one of the most rewarding experiences for my son.  He and his Scouting Crew enjoyed their rafting trip and speak about it often.  They have brought back many fond memories that will last them a life time.  He is constantly asking my husband and I to plan a family trip to the Gorge and we’re hoping to do that next Summer.

On “Manic Mondays” from Sept. 14 through Oct. 12, AOTG is offering a special $129 rate per person to rafters who want to take on both the Upper and Lower sections of the Gauley River or those who want to do the Upper twice. The rate is a $100 discount off the regular Saturday rate of $139. This is just one of many special discounts and packages offered by the premier adventure resort during the Gauley Season.

Some of the best whitewater rafting in the world is found below West Virginia’s Summersville Lake when the Army Corps of Engineers draws down the lake during the day on long weekends starting the first Friday after Labor Day. The releases result in intense rapids that come fast and often on the Gauley River with some 100 rapids, of which 53 are rated Class III and above. Gauley season 2015 opens Sept. 11 and ends Oct. 18. Most weekends feature rafting Fridays through Mondays.

The 12-mile Upper Gauley features seven Class V rapids while the 13-mile Lower Gauley rapids range from Class III to V, including three Class V drops.

“We call it the ‘Beast of the East,’ and people come from all over the world every year to enjoy the thrills of the Gauley River,” said Dave Arnold, co-founder and senior vice president of public relations and strategic partnerships for Adventures on the Gorge (AOTG). “If you want to go for round three, you’ll just have to come back the next weekend.”

Summersville Dam was completed in 1966, and every fall the Corps opens the gates to reduce Summersville Lake’s water level to control the potential for flooding.

Adventures on the Gorge was created by four outfitters that merged to offer much more than rafting. The resort now features aerial adventures, lake activities, overnight accommodations, dining and more. Rafting is still the most popular activity, but now guests often stay for multiple days to enjoy the diversity of a leading adventure resort.

AOTG offers packages for all interests and budgets, including several single- and multi-day packages built around rafting the Gauley. Complete package information can be found at
