Taking Care Of YOU Is Important That Means Sleep “How Journey”

How does your day start? Do you wake up, rub your eyes and then hit the ground running? It seems God gave us days made up of 24 hours. In those 24 hours we have a lot to do and many times think “there just aren’t enough hours in a day”. I know, I know, I’ve said it myself, but God is perfect and created a 24 hour day. That means we need to best figure out how to spend those 24 hours that please both ourselves, family and God!

First let me say it’s not easy, but nothing worth achieving is easy. So where do you skimp in life? Me? It was sleep. It was horrible. Just the thought of bed time would give me a panic attack. I would lay in bed with a million things running through my mind. When I woke up in the morning I wasn’t rested. During the day I was tired, sluggish and slow. I had chronic migraines and my knees were always angry.

My husband and I started a new routine. Bedtime is 10 pm and we get up at 6 am. The routine has helped me a lot but so has not worrying about the future. Instead I meditate and pray and almost command my body to relax. I try to straighten my legs and let them rest. I know this sounds too easy to be true right? This didn’t happen over night. It is a part of my “How Journey”. I thought people shouldn’t really have to learn to fall asleep. Shouldn’t we already know this when we hit adulthood? Apparently NOT! So many people are craving sleep and taking products to help them induce sleep.

Here are the changes that simple sleep have made in a little over a month.

  • My knees aren’t so angry. While they still hurt and probably always will, resting them and my body properly has taken away the constant throbbing and their angry-ness.
  • I’m more awake and alert during the day which in turn helps me achieve more of what I need to during the day.
  • I’m happier! Yes, I smile more, giggle more and just feel better as a person.
  • I have cut my chronic migraines from 4 or 5 a week to about 2 a month.
  • I have lost 12 lbs (no more late night snacks)

So what did I learn? I wrote a “How Journey” post about my Worker Bee Mentality, but we are humans and not made to be worker bees. We’re made to work to live not live to work. We are supposed to interact with one another, we’re supposed to smile, we’re supposed to enjoy life. Life is really uncomplicated, but we make it so complicated that we lose site of what really is important.

Are you trying to make changes in your life? How are you going about it?

Sleep is so very important and I think we are all figuring that out now as we get older. I know I am very achy when I do not get enough sleep and I do see that I want to eat more too. This post is definitely worthwhile for all of us to read.

Thank you for writing this. I think it is so important that parents understand taking care of themselves is a priority so they can take care of their family.

This is such a true post! As a stay at home mom to three kids under 8, I am always forgetting to take care of myself. I can definitely tell too! Sleep is so important, especially for women who need it more than men. Thanks for sharing this! 🙂

I go to sleep between 6 & 6:30 a.m., toss and turn for hours, wake up at least 4 times, get up once, and wake up to stay up between noon and 2 p.m. I don’t like it, but have to because of my husband.

I feel so much better when I can get 7 to 8 hours sleep a night! I feel like I have much more energy during the day!

Amber I had a child that didn’t sleep. He didn’t sleep through the night until he was about 3 and then he only need about 4 hours. He also didn’t nap. Now he’s 20 and wishes he could have that sleep back!

Sleep is such a luxury. For years I operated on six hours and now that I get a good eight hours a night, I realize how much better I feel.
