Converting An Old Bike To A Moped

We have a few older bikes here at the house and Neal, my husband, got a great idea to turn one of them into a moped for our 14 year old son (soon to be 15).  It was going to be Quinn’s August Birthday gift but excitement over came his father and he got it almost as soon as it was done.  Now he’s getting ready to get his license for it.

This became more of a community project and was loads of fun for the guys working on it.  When it was done even I was a little disappointed, because I had enjoyed watching grown men act like teenagers again.  Growing up next door to my husband he and his friends always had a project going.  They would build and work on motorcycles, cars and I even remember them turning a car into what looked like a mini pickup truck.

Our family has a constant string of projects and I JUST now decided to start blogging about them.  I’m really sorry I didn’t do it sooner because they give us so much joy.  One of the questions constantly asked of me is “So how much did that project cost?”, maybe because people think it costs more to DIY then to buy something already made, but this brings good clean fun to the house.  This project was under $150.  A bit more than we usually spend on diy projects but this one was more a labor of love.

Paint – My husband used red and flat black

Moped Adapter Kit – Available on eBay

A little extra money for incidentals (Like oh crap we broke the bike chain trying to get it going…)

Unfortunately, we didn’t do a before photo on this but the bike originally looked a bit like the one below.

As you can see not a lot went into this project but it was a bit complicated to put together.  We have video of all the people who helped to work riding the moped.  It doesn’t go super fast but it is cute, and will give our son lots of fun.

Under $150? That’s so cool for your son! (And for your wallet). Please continue to blog about your family projects, it is inspirational to those of us who can’t seem to get motivated.

Seeing how my bike is my ONLY means of transportation, this would be AWESOME! I guess I just gotta wear out my bike first though, lol. It’s the only one I got! Great idea! Now let’s just hope I don’t crash into a tree!
